Questions I’m often asked
If yours isn’t here, call or email and I’ll answer it.
Paying for it
How and when do I pay?
You get a fixed quote in writing first. A 50% deposit books the work in, and you pay the balance when the site goes live. Hosting is a yearly fee, paid in advance from the day the site goes live. I don’t charge by the hour.
Why is hosting £200 a year when I’ve seen it for a few pounds a month?
Cheap hosting gets you space on a server, and the rest is up to you. With mine, your site runs on UK servers I run myself. I keep it secure and up to date, back it up every day and monitor it, and if something goes wrong, I’m the one who fixes it. When you email for help, you get the person who built your site. Spread over the year, it works out at about £17 a month.
Is hosting required?
No, but I recommend it. Hosting with me means one person looks after the whole thing, and it’s how I keep the site fast, secure and backed up. If you’d rather host it elsewhere, I can build it for that.
Getting started
How long does a site take?
A Starter site is usually live in about a week. A Business site takes two to three weeks, depending on how quickly the words and photos come together. For Bespoke work, I set the timing in the quote. Whichever it is, I only need an hour or two of your time.
Do I have to write all the words myself?
Not on Business or Bespoke. Tell me about your business in a short call or a few emails and I’ll draft the words, in plain English that sounds like you. You get the final say before anything goes live. On Starter, you send me the words for the page and I lay them out.
Which areas do you cover?
Anywhere in the UK. I’m based in Staines-upon-Thames and work with businesses nearby, in Egham, Ashford, Chertsey, Addlestone, Weybridge, Sunbury, Shepperton, Woking and Feltham, and right across the country. The whole job is done by phone and email.
Once it’s live
Can you update my site after it’s live?
Yes. On Hosting + Care, which is £350 a year (about £29 a month), small changes such as new opening hours, prices or a new photo are included: send them over and I’ll make them. On Hosting, small one-off changes are a modest fixed fee. I quote for bigger additions, such as a new page or a booking system, before I start.
Will my site actually show up on Google?
Every site is built to be found: fast pages, clear titles and headings, and a sitemap Google can read. On Business and Bespoke, I also set up your Google Business Profile, so you can appear on Google Maps when people nearby search for what you do. Nobody can promise where you’ll rank.
Do I own the website and my domain?
Yes. The site is yours and the domain is registered in your name. If you move to another host, both go with you.
What if I want to leave?
You can leave whenever you like. I’ll hand over your site’s files and help you move to the new host. If you cancel hosting part-way through a year, I refund the unused full months.
Is it worth it?
I’ve already got a Facebook page. Do I need a website?
Keep the Facebook page: it’s worth having. But it isn’t yours. Facebook sets the rules and decides who sees your posts. A website is yours, it’s built to be found when someone searches Google for “plumber near me”, and it’s where people check you out before they spend money with you. The two work best side by side.
I tried Wix (or another DIY builder). Why pay for this?
DIY builders can look fine, but the sites are often slow and awkward on a phone, and you have to build and update them yourself. I build the site around your business and set it up to be found, then look after it once it’s live.
Tell me about the business and I’ll say which package fits.
I usually come back with a fixed quote within a day or two.
