Hi, I’m David.

I build websites for small businesses anywhere in the UK: pubs, cafés, restaurants, tradespeople, shops, salons, consultants, clubs and plenty of others.

I do the whole job. We agree what the site needs to do and what it will cost, then I design it, build it, put it on UK servers I run myself and look after it once it’s live. Most sites are a few clear pages that work well on a phone. Some need more, like table booking or a way to keep track of enquiries, and I’ve built those too.

A towpath is the path beside a river or canal, made so horses could pull boats along the water. There are plenty near me. The Thames Path runs through Staines, and the River Wey Navigation and the Basingstoke Canal both have towpaths you can walk for miles. The White Hart, one of the sites I’ve built, is a pub on the water at New Haw Lock on the Wey.

I chose the name because towpaths are plain, useful things that people still walk every day, long after they were built, and I’d like the sites I make to be the same.

I kept seeing good local businesses let down online. Some had a half-finished page or a site that was painfully slow on a phone, and plenty had no website at all.

I started Towpath Studio so a small business could deal with one person for all of it, at a price agreed before any work starts, and still reach that person next year when something needs changing.

The photographs on this site are printed as cyanotypes, the blue-and-white process engineers and architects once used to copy their drawings. It’s where the word blueprint comes from.

I use them, along with the drawing-style notes on the screenshots, because every site I make is planned properly before it’s built. You get the plan and the price in writing first.
