The brief

Problem to solve: When something goes wrong at home, most people don't know whether they're facing a DIY job, a £50 call-out, or a genuine emergency. Search engines return long articles. Trade directories assume you already know what type of contractor you need. There was no lightweight, conversational tool that could triage a home problem, assess severity, and point someone in the right direction quickly and for free. Target user: UK homeowners and renters, non-expert, anxious about cost and safety, on mobile. Product requirements: Accept a free-text description of any home problem Ask 3–5 clarifying diagnostic questions (multiple choice + free text fallback) Return: a likely cause, safety level (urgent / caution / low), safe DIY steps if appropriate, a difficulty rating, and the right type of tradesperson Surface real local business search links, not a fake directory Feel credible, calm, and profess

The outcome

A fully functional 5-page product, shipped from scratch: Business search generates pre-filled links to Yell, Google Maps, and Google Search — filtered by the exact trade type the AI recommended and the user's location. No fake listings, no scraping, no API cost. Visual design is premium-tier: dark slate hero with radial emerald glow, dot-grid texture, frosted-glass search card, card-lift hover effects, gradient CTAs, and a consistent SVG brand mark, deliberately designed to read as a funded startup product rather than a side project.
